Ok, XP comes preinstalled. HDD partitioned, partition two includes all software in case you need to restore it. I'll keep posting here little notes of everything I'm seeing.
First thing that I did not like. 40 GB partioned in two. One with 24 GB and the other with 12 GB, of those 12 only a little more than 2 GB used for the XP backup. I'm trying to see if using Partition magic I can leave that partition in only 3 GB and more the rest to C because I can't move now my 20 GB of Music to C and have all the programs that I need installed in there. I need at least 30 GB on C.
I'm sooooooooo jealous you won the race!!! Way to go!!! Now remember those "How to's" we discussed ... there's your first topic - a step by step guide of how you did that repartition please....
I can't believe you've done it already.... was it still dawn when the UPS guy arrived, or did you just intercept his truch at the depot???
As long as the eo is still operating as it did when it jumped off the truck.... we cannot have the VERY first, earliest adopter crashing his device....;)
It was scared when I saw the error of partition magic in the boot. It was asking me to press any key to continue and the device did not respond at all. Thanks good the on/off button solved the problem :D Let me tell you guys, these device is fast like hell!
OneNote 2003 no installed. I thought that it was going to be included in these devices by TabletKiosk. Microsoft Education Pack and Microsoft Experienced Pack are installed. Windows Journal and Stiky Notes Installed.
Ok, in case somebody needs to change anything in the bios. When you boot, you get a message asking to press F2 in case you want to change the setup. On that moment press the 3rd button in the right side of the screen. The video chip is configured with 16 MB of memory so I'm changing it to 64 that is the maximum.
Ok, now I'm installing Visual Studio 2005. One of the reason why I got this baby is to take my code on the road so I can do some quick changes in case it's needed. VS2005 setups ran ok under 800x600.
I'm really disappointed with the fact that they did not included the plastic stand shown in the manual and in some of the pictures that I posted here in this blog. I hope that TabletKiosk reads me and do something about it so other coming after me get these stands. They are really a must have.
Partition Magic version 7 did not work. I'll test later today version 8. I really don't like the way it's partitioned. If that does work may be I'll make a backup of partion D and reformat and repartition everything from 0.
In the BIOS, were there any 'boot from USB stick' options? Or was it just USB CDROM? Do you have a USB CDROM? Can you try booting knoppix? No-one has reported trying Linux on a VIA UMPC. Be the first!!!
chippy, in the boot there are other USB boot options. I'm now installing MSDN but when I get home I'll post some pictures of the BIOS and the different options.
Have you tried it in the 1024x600 resolution yet? I would like to know how readable the screen is at that resolution, especially in Onenote and Outlook.
Gamers, forget about halo or any other demanding game. This is not a machine for games. You will be able to play some. I just run 3DMarks 2001 with an score of 898 at 800x600. I'll post a detailed review with all results later.
In the Samsung reviews of the Q1 one of the consistent complaints was about the menus being hidden from view, because it the apps were not written for optimal view on the UMPC, or in this case the Q1.
Jk the problem is that they have done a poor job preparing the HDD. Now I have a partition with 24.4 GB and another with 12.8 GB that contains the 2.6 GB of setup files or restores files. Between the two partitions I right now have more than 23 GB free and I can't move my 20 GB of iTunes files! The recover partition is always just a little bit bigger than what it's needed to save the setup files. I do not why they prepared in this way.
I just cancelled my EO order. I am number 2 in line for the Q1 @CDW. Maybe Samsung can ship everything...and not partition the drive for a novice like me...
Having the CD that They are sending to us it's a metter of reformating everything and prepare it in the way you want. I don't see any reason why to be scared about it.
Who said anything about be "scared"? How many other brand new computers have your purchaed in the last quarter century where you had to reformat the hard drive out of the box? Scared does not quite cover it.
Listen, the fact that I don't like the way it was partitioned does not means that it's a general issue. May be for other this way is good. I'm trying to save some time repartitioning without having to reformat and reinstall everything but I'm sure that many people out there will live with these partitions in that way without any problem. What is really bad for me could be greate for others.
ctitanic you are correct. What is not working for you could easily be great for others. Thanks for clearing that up with that other poster. I am sure that s/he will is just jealous that you got your EO and s/he did not. In fact they are probably are so upset that they are merely running the EO down, even though it does appear that there has been some weird/non-conforming stuff going on.
oh well...you are right I have been jealous. Jealous of the fact I still do not have my Q1 and the "slow" processor with all the ports/compact flash slot and did I mention a stand. hmmmm
What was the error you got with Partition Magic? I got #2003. I took a backup onto an external drive, converted D: to NTFS and it worked. A simple "CHKDSK D: /F" might also resolve the problem, though you might run into problems with bigger drives.

Yes, I resized the partitions with Partition Magic 8. I resized D: to be 3GB and C: has the rest. This was after converting D: to NTFS. Be warned that this may screw up your restore options, I haven't looked into how it works.
I use Knoppix - Linux on CD or DVD - to back up partitions. Resize is also possible for FAT volumes at least.
I don't know if it has to be NTFS for you to join other partitions onto a first so that instead of C, D, and E - or as well, I think - you can have the second partition appearing as one, or more than one sub-directories. Knoppix of course will completely ignore this.
I like to have a smaller partition for the operating system and applications, so that I can back it up separately.
This is on desktop and Tablet PC, and I'm eyeing up the UMPC devices with interest - but I'm concerned that they'll be as slow as my older Tablet. Speech recognition in particular needs a lot of processing power. Maybe someone will invent an online speech recognition service where the processing is done by a huge server in Texas and sent back to your PC.
Hurry up, tell us what its like!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat stuff!!
My first impressions. The white color looks great in real life. It's like the one used in iPods! It's very well constructed.
ReplyDeleteOk, XP comes preinstalled. HDD partitioned, partition two includes all software in case you need to restore it. I'll keep posting here little notes of everything I'm seeing.
ReplyDeleteSounds good. Keep it coming.

ReplyDeleteOk, Partition Magic 7 (works) did the trick. Now I have 35 GB in C and a little more than 4 GB in D (where all the backup files are saved).

Well, I was happy to fast. Partition Magic failed when I booted so I still in the same position as I was before.
ReplyDeleteGuys, I'll answer questions later. I'll just keep posting my experiences. No time.
ReplyDeleteAs long as the eo is still operating as it did when it jumped off the truck.... we cannot have the VERY first, earliest adopter crashing his device....;)
ReplyDeleteVery cool Frank!!!!!!! :) :)

Installing Office 2003 right now!
ReplyDeleteinstead of posting - send me your eo ;) hope you will post many pics, reviews and videos!
ReplyDeleteetrinity
I'm glad so far that I selected the 7200 RPM HDD. It's really fast.
ReplyDeletewhew!! was holding my breath here.....glad your eo did not fail you:)
ReplyDeleteLet us know about Office and later, when you have time I'd be interested to know about inking and Office.
It get's hot when it's connected to power.
ReplyDeleteOneNote 2003 no installed. I thought that it was going to be included in these devices by TabletKiosk. Microsoft Education Pack and Microsoft Experienced Pack are installed. Windows Journal and Stiky Notes Installed.
ReplyDeleteThe plastic stand did not come, it's mentioned in the page 41 of the printed manual but it's not in the box. I'm dissapointed with this.

Why don't you give TabletKiosk a call and ask them to ship you a stand. Also did Partition Magic work?

Steve.
I like to know how you like the VS2005 in the UMPC. How much ram do you have on it? 1g or 512mb... thanks
ReplyDeleteOk, Visual Studio Installed. It runs very well. I would say that faster than in my laptop (4800 RPM HDD, that's why).
ReplyDeleteAgain, I got mine with 1 GB of RAM and 7200 RPM HDD.
ReplyDeletechippy, in the boot there are other USB boot options. I'm now installing MSDN but when I get home I'll post some pictures of the BIOS and the different options.

1024x600 is not bad but I prefer the 800x600. It looks sharper.
ReplyDeleteI'm right now backing up the drive d where all the setup and restore files are saved. ;)
ReplyDeleteYes, when it's connected to the power supply it gets hot.
ReplyDeleteGamers, forget about halo or any other demanding game. This is not a machine for games. You will be able to play some. I just run 3DMarks 2001 with an score of 898 at 800x600.

How about the view and menu hides that were being complained about on the Q1.
ReplyDeleteBTW, Partition Magic 8 also failed resizing the partitions. :( Any advice?
ReplyDeleteI did not read any thing about those menus so I don't know what you are talking about.
ReplyDeleteOk, this is the First post from my eo!
ReplyDeleteno cd here.
ReplyDeleteIn the Samsung reviews of the Q1 one of the consistent complaints was about the menus being hidden from view, because it the apps were not written for optimal view on the UMPC, or in this case the Q1.

Well, I just read Martin explanation about the CD and the Stand. Anyway, that does not explain to me why the partitioned the HDD in this way. :(
ReplyDeletewell if you can not figure it out what chance do we mere humans stay...
ReplyDeleteHere is the link for eBay www.ebay.com

No, I have not tried the BT yet.
ReplyDeletebetter try that BT...if it does not work you can always use the install discs that came with your EO..opps...
ReplyDeleteall the drivers and all you need to install is in the second partition. You did not get it... ???
ReplyDeleteWhat was the error you got with Partition Magic? I got #2003. I took a backup onto an external drive, converted D: to NTFS and it worked. A simple "CHKDSK D: /F" might also resolve the problem, though you might run into problems with bigger drives.

Best regards.
