This is a extremely important news because like I always says, performance is a multiple variables equation. It's not a matter of just having a good processor, you need a good graphic chip, you need memory and you need a fast HDD also. Today, all the HDD running in our UMPCs are running at 4200 RPM, and that makes all the HDD operations extremely slow. That's why this news posted at Engadget is to me one of the best news for the Small Factor PC community.
While others have hit the magical 160GB mark in an 8-mm thick form factor, this is the first 1.8-inch SATA to reach 5400RPM.
I think most current 1.8"s are running 4200, not 4800.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't this approach irrelevant now with the availability of SSDs? Soon HiCap SSDs will be available at competitive prices, correct?
ReplyDeletethanks ignar...
ReplyDeletesteve, the cheaper ssd still a lot more expensive than on of these HDD. Believe me. In another hand, we are talking about 160 GB, you have missed this detail.
No Frank, SanDisk did a press release about HiCap SSDs at competitive prices within a year.
ReplyDeleteIt was not a 160 GB SSD as far as I can remember. SSD are far from 160 GB yet.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, there are going to be years before you see the SSD at the same price or lower than HDD. Do not expect to see that happening this year or next one.
