Samsung has released a firmware update for SSD made by this company and installed in Surface Pro 3. To have an idea of the improvement I took one screen shot of how my SSD was working before the upgrade…

Face it. If your carry two devices is because you are not totally happy with either of  two. You need two devices to complement each other.

She could have bun using just one device, the Surface Pro 3. But she ends carrying the iPad, the MacBook  and her notes.

Surface Hub updated

Surface Hub is an App that allows to configure the Surface Pro 3 Pen.

Well, Microsoft just released an update that adds the capability of disabling the Windows Button, feature many times asked by artists. Definitely a nice option to have.

Using Google Hangout for demos

Recently a friend of mine tested Google Hangout as a tool for demoing software. Basically he used the capability of Hangout to stream live events  to Youtube in combination with the capability of sharing the screen of his  PC (or Mac, that's what I think he was using for his experiment).

So I decided to replicate this test using my Surface Pro 3 and IE.

So it works. It may be not the ideal tool but it's free. Once the video is on Youtube you can do some editing there adding a sound track like I did in the second test. The downside could be that somebody watch your live event before you do the editing. Small price to pay, don't you think?

Surface Hub.

Microsoft Just released the Surface Hub. Few days ago Microsoft released an update for the Pen driver. This update was in preparation for this tool which allows you to control the pressure sensitivity of the Pen and how the Top button behaves either calling the desktop version of OneNote or the MUI version.

Surface Pro 3 in the classroom

Today I took my Surface Pro 3 to a whole day training. This is the first time that I'm using it in this scenario so to me it was a learning experience.

I started taking notes in OneNote but then the trainer gave us a PDF copy of the Powerpoint presentation that he was using so I switched to use Drawboard PDF.
 

First of all, I should say that this tool has all the elements needed to review or write notes and comments in a PDF file. Probably it's the best tool available of it's kind using MUI. But... Performance was not too good. The writing experience was not as fluid like I would like it to be and some times it took few seconds to "refresh" the page where I was writing my notes. Other than that it did its job decently.

I ended the day with 50% of battery left in my PRO 3. I was taking notes from time to time letting the SP3 go to sleep while I was listening or doing some exercises in a laptop prepared for the training. But even if I had to use it more time taking notes I'm confident that the battery was going to last me the whole day of work in this scenario with more than 6 hours of battery.

Overall, I'm extremity please with the experience and totally convinced that there is not any other device out there that could serve to students better than the Surface Pro 3.

The SP3 "issues", the truth behind the claims

The Hyper-V and Connected Standby: You can't have both at the same time. The workaround is here:

According to some sources the Hyper-V team is aware of this situation an presumable working in a fix.
 

WLAN and Sleep Mode or Connected Standby. Most of the problems have been fixed by Microsoft updates. Still unresolved the case of rooters like the Airport Extreme that share the same SSID in the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands and the Limited connector error that appears on those devices with Hyper-V enabled. Heavy heat of SP3. For me, the SP3 i5 4Gb that I own is performing at the temperature that I was expecting from this processor. The so called "throttling" issue, most of those reporting the issue are gamers pushing the limits of these machines. I would say that an enterprise user, 95% of them, will not be affected by this "issue".  New potential owners should understand the machine limitations and understand the challenges that having a body design like the one in the Surface PRO 3 represent.

Airport Extreme Workaround for SP3 owners

Some of the users that have Wifi issues they either own an Airport Extreme router or a router that's using the same SSID for the 2.4 Ghz and the 5 Ghz bands. Recently one of this users posted this picture to illustrate the speed difference between his MacBook and the Surface Pro 3.

 

I asked him to change the SSID to a different one and post the same picture.

Configure OneNote to save battery

OneNote runs some background tasks that could impact negatively in the battery life of your tablet So it's important to configure it to avoid this.

How to disable Connected Standby

This is a question many time asked by SP3 owners that want full access to Power Plans. Before I show how to do it I should add that  tweaking the Power Plans may have a negative impact in the battery life.  In another hand Connected Standby is one of the best features added to this  device. It's the feature that allows you to still receive emails and other services while the SP3 is in Standby.

To disable Connected Standby you should open the Registry and change it:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\CsEnabled (From 1 to 0)

If your want to revert it back then just change the value to 1. After each change you need to restart the Surface Pro 3.

FYY Ultra Slim Smart Cover Stand Case

If you are looking for a good case to protect your Surface Pro 3 and are not a heavy touch keyboard user then this is the perfect case. You can still using the keyboard without removing it from the case and even carry the device around with the keyboard covering the display and the case front cover in the back of the tablet but you wont be able to close the case with the touch keyboard connected. I'm a heavy Tablet user that writes all my documents, emails, etc, using the pen so for me this case is the perfect match to my habits. The product quality is good. The package mentioned a loop for the pen but I could not find any, that's the main reason why I'm not giving the 5 stars.

 

This is the 3rd case I have tested and so for my preferred and the price that I paid including shipping was less than $10! They are on sale for $2.99 (regular price $39.99)

 

Exact Microsoft Pro 3 case short review

I recently bought the Exact Case for the Surface Pro 3 at an extremely low price:  less than 3 dollars!.

The case qualify is not bad but is not top of the line either. I like the fact that it includes an elastic band as a handler in the back that will allows you to hold the Tablet second with one hand.

There an two minor problems with this case, the first one is the top of the case cover the vents and as result the SP3 can get hotter than normal. So I modified it cutting a hole in the case like it's shown in this picture.

That increased the air flow up to a decent level.

The second issue was the case leaving very little space in the right side to execute the gesture to call the right side charm.  So I had to cut the case in that area leaving more room to do the gesture without accidentally touching the Windows button. The below picture shows how this change  looks like.

Summarizing: with these modifications you can have a decent case for less than 10 dollars  including shipping.

Netgear AC1900 R7000 a good router for the SP3

This is something that I thought I was going to get on Christmas but that I ended buying it on Ebay for $125

Pros

a) Works with the SP3, without any issues

b) My home Wifi speed easily is twice what I had before using the dual band Asus asus rt-n56u

c) Better range

Cons

a) The VPN configuration requires to disable IPv6

b) The whole configuration only covers the most simple features or parameters.

Conclusion

A router with a very good performance that uses the latest WiFi technology.

WD TV live now with Miracast support

WD added Miracast support to its WD TV Live media player. This means that you can project your Surface PRO 3 screen to any TV connected to one of this players. I have two of these players and I was able to connect my Surface PRO 3 to them without any problems.

There is not a better companion

Recently my bad feeding habits followed during my entered life put me in the hospital and I took with me my Surface Pro 3.

 

So this post is about my experiences with this machine during my recovery period.

Most of the USA Hospital have free Wifi service for patients and visitors. The Surface Pro 3 connected to this service without any problem and with a decent performance, enough to use Netflix at SD resolution, check my emails, read the news, etc.

Thanks to the new location of the speakers and the super high quality screen watching HD movies was a nice experience. The sound quality is a lot better than the achieved in my old Surface 2.

The very low weight of the PRO 3 helped me a lot. But the feature that to me was the most important was the stand.  The fact that I could open it at almost any imaginable angle increased the usability of this machine to a level hard to imagine unless you are in this same low mobility condition like the one I was.

I have been using Tablet PCs, UMPCs, laptops and every type of tablet currently in the market, including iPads, for a long time and I can say without any doubt that none of them would have been able to do a better job than the Surface Pro 3.
