New redesigned UMPC from TabletKiosk

According to this news posted today at Gottabemobile, TabletKiosk will start shipping a the TabletKiosk eo i7300 in April. The new redesigned UMPC is using an Atom processor running at 1.6 GHz and the batteries should last around 9 hours according to TabletKiosk.

Another good point is that this will be the first UMPC with Active and Passive Digitizer.

Tuftab gets an Atom

The Tuftab is a semi rugged UMPC made by TabletKiosk, leader in Tablet PC technology. Now the company has renewed this series using this time an Atom 1.6 GHz processor.

TabletKiosk eo i7300 UMPC in Q1 2009

TabletKiosk is without any doubt a pioneer of the UMPC in USA and the whole world. Today GottaBeMobile has posted the news about a new release coming from this company in the Q1 of 2009.

For the eo i7300, we expect to begin shipping in Q1 of 2009.  Based on customer feedback, we’ve been changing the design  and the way that the interchangeable modules fit together.  We’ve also been working with our engineers to create a design that is patentable    

Chances are that at CES 2009 you are going to see a near final version of the product that will knock your socks off.

TabletKiosk is experimenting with Linux

Here is a video of a TabletKiosk i440D running openSuse 10.3 Linux.

I was surprised to see how well the on screen keyboard works and the presence of Xournal a replacement for Journal an application to takes notes in "Ink" that comes with TabletPC 2005 Edition OS. Even the screen rotation and the fingerprint reader work perfectly.

Are we going to see Linux as an option for this machine? That's the question I'm leaving in the air to TabletKiosk. I hope so, even when I'm happy with Microsoft OS, competition is what's needed to see improvements in any OS.

Patent on Touch Screen Technologies?

Yesterday I received a few Google's Alert messages relative to TabletKiosk. I disregarded them because I covered the initial news while back and secondly because all this is just a bad joke. Today, Gail Levy, Marketing Director of TabletKiosk has posted a short note in her blog clarifying a few things about this lawsuit.

If Typhoon Touch Technologies can own the universal license for all Mobile Touch Screen Technology, then maybe I should apply for a patent that covers making a call on a mobile phone or using a knob to turn on a car radio...

After reading all her explanation all I can say is that TabletKiosk has all my support on this one. Touch is a human sense and as far I can understand it can't be patented. And if Typhoon wins this lawsuit I'm going to patent "peeing". That for sure will be an easy way for me to get rid of all my debts.

RIP Sydney Pollack

You all probably knew Sydney Pollack, the famous director of Tootsie. But I'm sure that you probably did not know that he was a Tablet PC owner and fan.

Sydney Pollack, the Academy Award-winning director of "Out of Africa" who achieved acclaim making popular, mainstream movies with A-list stars, including "The Way We Were" and "Tootsie," died yesterday. He was 73.

Linda A. Epstein, Tablet PC enthusiast and editor of TabletPC.com had the pleasure of teaching Mr. Pollack to use a Tablet PC.  This photograph shows him using a Sahara Slate PC from TabletKiosk, one of the two devices he owned.

Typhoon Touch accuses TabletKiosk of...

Typhoon Touch is accusing Tabletkiosk and other Tablet PC makers of patent violations according to a news published at CNET News.

After suing Dell and Motion Computing for allegedly infringing on two of its patents for portable computers with touch-screen technology, Typhoon, and licensing partner and co-plaintiff Nova Mobility Systems, said Tuesday they are targeting three more potential infringers: Xplore Technologies, Electrovaya, and Sand Dune Ventures, which makes tablet PCs under the brand TabletKiosk.

I have been in contact with Tabletkiosk in the last - almost already- two years many times for many reasons, and even on those moments where I have been "rude" and virtually a "pain in the neck" I always have found in them a great level of professionalism and honesty. Two virtues hard to find now days.

xTablet T8600 Rugged Tablet PC

I have to confess that I really did not believe that rugged Tablet PCs were that hard to break until I saw these videos:

The second video was really unbelievable. That's the kind of Tablet I need for my daughter.

TabletKiosk will show at CES two new devices

Tabletkiosk has refreshed its web page with a new banner that clearly indicates that they will be showing two devices at CES. After carefully analyzing the banner it seems to me that one of them is a rugged Tablet PC with a screen size between 8 to 10 inches. The second one is a UMPC, some this that we already knew from our last contact with Martin Smekal, CEO of Tabletkiosk.

After reading this news at Gottabemobile I contacted Martin Smekal, Tabletkiosk's CEO asking for a confirmation and here is what he told me about it:

Hello Frank,

Good to hear for you – I can only confirm that we have a new UMPC which will be released in Q-1 based on the new Intel Silverthorne (Menlow) platform.  This unit is a completely new in-house design based on feedback / research we have received from our customers and past unit designs we have shipped.

I’d be happy to discuss this unit in detail with you after our formal announcement at CES, but until then I can say no more then this…..

This is going to be the second time that Tabletkiosk releases a Intel Based UMPC, the first time was with the 7200 series which market life was extremely short.

No Vista drivers for i7200 series

TabletKiosk has posted the bad news in its forum.  

I'm sorry to inform you that TabletKiosk has no formal plans to release drivers for the eo i7200 series to support Microsoft’s Windows Vista. 

While the eo i7200 series was certified by Microsoft as "VISTA Compliant", TabletKiosk never released this unit with this operating system nor were we able to secure the proper source code for either the O/S or chipsets required to complete these drivers to a level that we found to provide an acceptable computing experience.

Well, that confirms what I said back in this other post, Founder, the maker of these devices did not have any plans to release Vista Drivers for these devices. That's how businesses work in China, they change plans and they do not give you any explanation. Well, at least this is my personal opinion. Without Founder support there was nothing that could be done by TabletKiosk.

Sahara Slate TabletPC Small Photo Review

The guys from todoUMPC Online Store sent me these pictures of this beauty: The Tabletkiosk Sahara Slate.

What do they think about this TabletPC? They found it fast and they loved the design. one thing, this baby is not a UMPC so be prepared to pay more than 2200 dollars.

My eo v7110 logon screen is calibrated!

The other day I posted about a little tool that allows users to calibrate the logon screen in devices suffering of this problem. Well, today I had the time to test it myself.

The Tabletkiosk v7110 is one of the UMPC that have this problem. When you turn on the device and you reach the logon screen you have to use the mouse to type your password because the touch screen is not calibrated at all. I tried in the past many tips but none of them good. Today I can say without a doubt that GlTabCal is the solution.

It's very easy to use. You press the first button to calibrate your screen in any resolution. After that you press the second to test it. And at last you press the apply button. You will be asked to re boot your machine and there you will be happy to discover that your logon screen is calibrated.

This tool does not work with devices using Touchkit or the eGalax HID Beta Driver. That means that basically it works in Tabletkiosk eo v7110 devices as far as I recall.

I know that other devices like the Q1 XP using the HID eGalax driver have this problem, but so far there is not any solution for those.

Another good news for Tabletkiosk eo v7110 owners is that a rotation screen tool is going to be released very soon. the tool was tested in Vista and it works. Today I worked with the author checking the registry in XP and according to what he saw in my eo, it seems that it should work after a few changes.

Shipping of the eo TufTab temporarily stopped

Today one of my readers made a comment about Tabletkiosk not shipping any more the eo TufTab. I have to say that I had heard that rumor before but this time I decided to go to the source and ask what was going on. So here is the answer from Gail Levy, Marketing Director of Tabletkiosk.

Hi Frank,

Yes, it's true that we have temporarily stopped shipping the eo TufTab due to some quality issues found during our testing period.  We feel that it is more important to ship eo TufTabs that live up to the quality and standards showcased in the video from VIA than to ship units that do not live up to customer expectations. 

I am hearing from our QA team in Taiwan that we should be shipping the units before the end of the month.

Hopefully this information helps you out.
