Ubuntu in a HTC Shift

Well, there is not too much info that I can say about it but what you can see in this video. Apparently this person installed Ubuntu got everything working on his HTC Shift.

And... He is even having a good time on it...

A closer look at the HTC Shift from Sprint

Matt Miller is a well know person in our community and that makes his opinion, even for persons like me that do not like the Shift and think that HTC has chosen a really bad moment to release this already semi obsolete device to the market, a really valuable opinion that is worth to read. 

I’ve been using an HTC Shift from Sprint for over a week now and as you can see in the more than 140 photos and screenshots found in my image gallery and quick and dirty post yesterday I have had a chance to try out most all aspects of the device. As I said yesterday, I was planning to post my full review next Monday, 24 March, but Amazon posted a pre-order page of the device. The HTC Shift from Sprint has a model designation of HTC X9000 and a suggested retail price of US$1,499.

And said semi obsolete because this device is using a processor A110 well know for it poor performance compare to the old Pentium M, Celeron M and Core Solo processors. But thinking a lot deeper, after seeing the next generation called Atom which has even a poorer performance may be the decision of using the A110 is not that bad after all. Anyway... The HTC Shift with a Core Solo would had became the dream machine of many members of the UMPC community.

Installing WM programs on HTC Shift

An XDA-developers user has found a way to access the C Drive from "WM6" and also install any program in that cut down version of WM6 installed in the HTC Shift.

I have managed to almost access Windows Vista from the Windows Mobile side.

Chippy shows us the HTC Shift

HTC is synonymous of quality and that's probably why the HTC Shift is one of the UMPC that have raised the highest expectation from all the UMPC fans. At the same time I have seen many already disappointed with the news that this device does not include WM6 in a second partition like it was initially supposed. Here is a video from Chippy, our friend from UMPCPortal.com who was present in the HTC UK Event a few days ago and had the opportunity to play a few minutes with this UMPC:

Screen resolution and Battery Life are linked

Probably many of you remember this post where I tried to prove that screen resolution and performance are linked. We all know that performance and battery life are also linked. More performance means less battery life, at least in all the UMPCs that we know so far. Well, here is a post of Kaz911 interviewing Kevin Chen from HTC where he says clearly:  

The screen is only 7" and since power consumption has to be low, HTC decided on the low resolution screen.

So, running at a lower resolution could help you to save some battery life because it helps with the overall performance of the machine.

Beside this note, this interview brought some bad news for those waiting for the HTC Shift. It seems that this device will not have voice capability but just data capability. In another words, you will be able to browse the web using your cell phone service provider but you will not be able to make phone calls.

Dynamism.com - HTC Shift

Dynamism is taking pre orders for the HTC Shift, $1499.

The UMPC field is becoming a little bit like modern politics: there is a race to the center. Traditional big notebook makers like ASUS and Samsung have been releasing small and impressive UMPCs. As they try to shrink their PCs, phone makers have been trying to bulk up and add more power to their phones (especially Windows Mobile devices). Nobody has pushed smart phone functionality farther and harder than Taiwan's HTC. HTC recently released the HTC Advantage, which is the most capable Windows Mobile device to date. Now, HTC has gone all the way to full-fledged UMPC.

I like that: The UMPC field is becoming a little bit like modern politics.

I contacted my PR Rep in HTC (whose last contact with me was on April 3 saying "Wait for late summer") saying I have every intention to purchase one when it is available.

Hugo Reviews The HTC Shift

Oops he did it again! This time he came back with a full review of the HTC Shift  for many the most anticipated UMPC of this year.

"I had The HTC Shift for a little over 60 hours and was able to play with many of its great features, which include Pocket PC, HSDPA, Vista Business, Tilt Touchscreen, QWERTY keyboard and more. It is an incredible device with many possibilities, this video will hopefully showcase some of that. I managed to literally squeeze it into a very tight schedule I am running at present and did what I could to cover off some of the burning questions folks might have".

This machine will be for many the perfect machine... I... I will wait for the next pass.
