Samsung's SNE-60K e-reader

There are few companies that know how to combine a good design, functionality and innovation and one of them is Samsung. The SNE-60k is an example of that. For the first time we will see handwriting recognition in a device that's not using a Microsoft's OS.

Well, here's one e-reader that won't have too much trouble standing out from the pack -- not only does Samsung's SNE-60K boast a 6-inch touchscreen with support for handwriting recognition, but it has a fairly unique slider design that hides some of the additional controls (no QWERTY keypad on this one, though).

Samsung will use Nvidia chips

The coming soon N510 Netbook from Samsung will use a Nvidia chip. What's the gain? 1080p support is not enough?

"The Netbook term was created by Intel to define a segment offering a limited experience, but with Ion you don't have those same limitations," Nvidia's Haas said. "These systems can handle mainstream gaming, HD video, and new GPU-powered applications. You might as well call them notebooks, because that's what they are."

Samsung presents the SWD-M100 MID

  The SWD-M100 is, as far as I can remember, the first MID using Windows Mobile 6.1.

Now, there’s a MID (mobile internet device) that we could use to blog on the go. The Samsung SWD-M100D is a WiMax + WiFi device that has both a touch display and a sliding QWERTY keyboard. The most important feature (for live blogging) is the 3 Megapixel camera in the back, that should kick the battery of my Blackberry 8320 real hard.

New UMPC from Samsung

Recently Samsung discontinued the series Q1U and many saw that as a sign of the eminent dead of UMPC and them being replaced by cheaper netbook. Well, they were wrong, Samsung has not abandoned the UMPC category and will release soon a new one: the Q1EX.

 Samsung has released its first notebook, the NC10, in Korea. A move that many of us were expecting.

SAMSUNG finally released their first netbook called NC10 in Korea with U$ 690.00 price tag. Actually, this NC10 discovered earlier in WiBro (WiMax) product launching ceremony which presented by Korea Telecom in August.

Many users are for sure willing to know how how the Q1U with a 600 MHz A100 processor performs. This short video shows this UMPC playing a Divx video. Unfortunately there is not any information available about the specifications of the Dvix file.

I thought that Samsung was not selling any more the SPH-9200 but for what I can see in this video they showed this UMPC recently in a Communication Event in Asia.

Do Samsung think to sell this UMPC in USA or Europe anytime soon?

New Q1 coming next year

According to news published today at TechRadar, Samsung is thinking about to refresh the Q1 series in the first quarter of the next year. 

“We will refresh our design and upgrade our performance and specification. We will continue to invest in form factors. We will launch the 3^rd generation of UMPC probably early Q1 next year,”

That's a good news! From all the UMPC in the market Samsung has been the most successful one in my opinion.

Clarification about the Samsung P9

A few days ago I have published here about a new UMPC concept video that I found in Youtube. In that concept was used Samsung trade mark and a model number and that made me believe that it was a UMPC Concept video created by Samsung that somebody found/got and published in Youtube. Never in my mind I thought that somebody could have been used the brand of such respectable company to publish a concept video. It's something that probably it's ok if you are showing this video in your classroom but completely unacceptable if you are thinking about publishing it in the WEB. Well, my mistake, I thought that to avoid this kind of error was enough not to visit MySpace - you know what I mean. The concept is really good and I hope that in the future we will see something like this coming out with a real Brand Name and Model Number.

When or will be this UMPC ever release? It's unknown. So far the only piece of information that's clear is the name: Samsung P9. I personally will add this model number to my notes about UMPC to follow up because without any doubt, this is one of the best concepts that I have seen in two years.

Samsung Q1 Ultra specs is misleading

If you are planning to buy the Samsung Q1 Ultra be aware of this situation. In order to save some money or to mislead customers, that I don't know for sure, Samsung is describing in its site and all the documentation the Q1 Ultra as a device with BT integrated. But the fact is that the model currently being sold (NP-Q1UAY01) does not have BT.

Both Samsung Q1 Ultra microsite and official pdf states Bluetooth on model NP-Q1UAY01 but customers are getting it without!!!

I share the same concern than JKK. People one buying a product and they are getting a different one! Samsung should stop this practice as soon as possible. Stop playing with our pockets.

Samsung's Deluxe MITs (model SPH-P9200)

It seems to me that this is one of those devices that we never are going to see here in USA neither in Europe. How long they have been showing this device?  A year?  

Samsung Electronics unveiled its compact UMPC 'Deluxe MITs(model: SPH-P9200)' at the Samsung 4G Forum 2007 in Korea market. As a successor model of SPH-P9000, it can connect to wireless Internet and VoIP phone via Mobile WiMax. Running on Windows XP, the SPH-P9200 adopts 5-inch touch screen, folding QWERTY keyboard and 30GB HDD.

A whole month of battery life!

Can you imagine that? This power bank reported by AVING USA can do that for you.

Samsung SDI is showcasing its portable power supply ‘Fuel Cell’ at the company’s showroom ‘Sdium’, which enables you to use your notebook pc up to for a month.

This is why I always say that it's more important for me performance than battery life because you always can find a solution for your power needs but you can't do the same with a bad performance. Price and availability still known.

Q1-U/V: Return to Sender!

 Today I found this post at Gottabemobile forum.

Today was decision day for me: I returned the Q1-U/V to Costco... I just wasn't ready to spend $1300 for a device I needed to hack and upgrade to make it work as well as an old Q1.  I'll miss that gorgeous screen a lot, but I won't miss the Vista circle prompt that I spent a good part of my time staring at while waiting for something to happen.

And I was surprised to see how many others joined the first post saying the same thing.

Guys, I have been warning people about the A110 being a slow processor since I read the first page with the specifications of it on it. But people do not listen. When they get in love with a device they just don't listen, don't read, don't analyze. Period.

The Q1U could have the best display in the world, the most efficient keyboard in the world but you have to face it and put in your other side of the scale that it also have a very slow processor. You can tweak it all you can like I did with my eo v7110. But you get up to a point where you discover yourself more time tweaking your machine than enjoying it. And that's  a really bad feeling.

If you are a IT professional a Q1U is a waste of time. IT Guys love performance, at least most of them. If you are not in this field and all you are looking for is for something a little bit faster than a PPC where you can run PC applications on it then go for a Q1U.

Or lets put it in a different way. Put in one side of your scale Battery Life and in the other side Performance. If you selected Battery Life then go for the Q1U. But then do not try to get performance, that's just not possible. What you are going to do? Go back to XP? I'm a IT guy and I'm using Vista in my Q1 and XP in my PC at work. Every time I click in the Start UP button of my PC at work I cry for Vista Search Field there. It's so easy to open any program you have installed by just typing the name of it in that field! Every time I use my eo v7110 with XP I cry to have the handwriting recognition I have in Vista, no counting the same issue with the Start Up menu.

Probably these things do not look that big of the issue but it's in our mentality to go forward. And having Vista and uninstalling it to install XP is like going backward. It's psychological. Just put two notebooks in a Store shelf, one with XP and one with Vista. People are going to buy more the one with Vista. Why? Because it's the latest OS.

And do not get me wrong. I'm not saying that the Q1U is a bad machine or that the A110 is a bad processor. All I'm saying is that the Q1U was designed looking for Battery Life, not for performance. And when users are thinking about to buy it they should be informed about this point. That will safe them a lot of time and aggravations.

Please, listen to me before you buy your next UMPC, what is more important to you, Performance or Battery Life? If you honestly answer this question you will be the happiest UMPC owner on Earth.

TurboMemory in Samsung's UMPCs?

 According to Tech.co.uk Samsung is thinking about to release something close to Intel's Turbomemory in the shape of Hybrid Harddrives installed in its Laptops and probably UMPCs.

Also interesting were Chand's statements on Intel's TurboMemory, the motherboard-based flash memory designed to boost boot-up times and aid faster application loading. As we reported earlier in the week, HP isn't keen on the tech. And neither is Samsung. Chand revealed to Tech.co.uk that "hybrid is the way we'll go" - meaning that the company is more likely to plump for hybrid hard drives. This will take advantage of Vista's ReadyDrive tech, which has the same effect as TurboMemory. But instead of keeping the flash memory on the board, it's part of the hard drive. And who debuted the first hybrid drive? Samsung, of course.

That would be something really good. But please, do not increase prices.
