Q1 unboxing ceremony

I received a Q1 yesterday and I have spent more than 8 hours "playing" with it. I know that all of you want to see some pictures and to know what I think about. Well, here are all pictures that I took during the unboxing ceremony... and a little more because as a good geek my unboxing ceremony did not end where any normal person ends it. I ended opening it and replacing the memory card for a 1Gb card. Come on guys! Do you really think that I can live with 512 MBs!?

Q1 UNBOXING

What do I think about it?

It's a good looking machine! Every detail, from the box up to the littlest button have been perfectly designed to attract buyers. In this point Samsung is a clear winner. If you are looking for a portable DVD player, an iPod or a communicator, here is your perfect device. If you are looking for a Car Companion PC... do not look any more, you have found it. If you are looking for a UMPC to take notes, work with Visual Studio, work with databases, Word, Excel, or any other office kind of application this machine is not for you. It can be used but the experience is not going to be as good or pleasant as in Amtek T700 or any other device with a joystick mouse and a less sensitive display.

I'll write more about this unit from Samsung and it performance in next notes.

  1. It is a very good analysis !
But if the AMtek had a trackpoint, the samsung would have been the best. only with the trackpoint is absolultly neecessary.

samsung, the firm, is ridiculous. and samsung confirme with the Q1b and hsdpa...

  3. Until now I can't see the "analysis", because I am still waiting for the reasons and arguments, why from your point of view the Q1 isn't the real machine to take notes, work with Word, Excel and so on.

Yes, and I am curious - because I think about buying a Q1 myself ;-).

Patience is a virtue. I'll unite about it later. Including pictures, benchmarks, etc.

  5. at the moment, with the Asus R2H issue, the Q1 basic is a obsolete.

the only hope for the Q1 is with a modem inside umts.

the amalysis where isn't the real machine to take notes, work with Word, Excel and so on, was brought back by sewral reviews.

  6. I'm sorry but I totally disagree with your comment about taking notes on a Q1. I've been doing it for over three months and haven't had a problem. Especially with a bigger stylus than Samsung provide.

  7. John,

Please, test other origamis than Q1... and the best will be for you.

    best regards.

  8. Test other origamis? Not in Norway. Even my Samsumg Q1 had to be purchased from England. Without a keyboard (Norwegian keys of course) and no Norwegian recognition it's understandable that UMPCs are not popular here. I'm English so it isn't a problem for me (apart from getting hold of technology, especially at a reasonable price).
However, as I said before the Q1 works for me apart from being useless outside (that's only a problem in the short summer months). In the winter it's just too cold to take it outside!

  9. Well, I have two origamis at this moment to test and compare and the Q1 is not for me the best option for taking notes in Word - I´m not talking about ink.

For example, I´m having a lot of problems in some programs just selecting a word to copy. I drag the pen to select and when I click in the highlighted text it goes away before I can get the menu to select copy. I have to go all the time the top menu to select copy. I´m a mouse kind of person and I´m really having a lot of problems without it in my Q1.

If the Q1 was the first UMPC I played with probably I would had get used to it but I got the eo v7110 first and now I´m used to use the mouse/joystick.

Another this is the screen sensitivity. With my eo I can lay my hand on the screen while typing. With Q1 I had to be all time aware of this issue.

  10. I think that I should add a note now that I have the HID Driver installed in my Q1. Since the installation of the HID Driver everything has changed. Now the handwriting in the Q1 is good and it's easier to use the stylus as a mouse, like in my old Q1.

Conclusion, the problems that I had with this unit were basically relative to not having HID support.
